Summer Camp Traditions: Singing Loudly for All to Hear

Spring has sprung! To us, that means we’re closer to our favorite time of the year- summer camp! One of the best traditions of summer camp is singing songs. Gathering around the flag, after meal time, or when you’re strolling from activity to activity, singing camp songs together bonds your unit and is one time you can be as loud as you want!

No one tells you to “be quiet” or “settle down” and everyone’s voice is heard. There’s something about everyone singing together that brings unity and joy as everyone’s voices echoes across camp.

Some of the most cherished camp memories are made with everyone’s friends and buddies singing loudly together at activities or flag. Hugs are shared, circles are formed, and smiles are seen. It’s a time to make up silly hand motions, be crazy, and dance together. Camp songs also support all areas of development. Songs work on rhythm, motion, patterns, creativity, and language. Through camp songs, people are encouraged to gather and celebrate their unique abilities, which is what ESP is all about!

We’re sharing some of our favorite camp songs to get everyone in the spirit and have a fun activity to do while at home. If you’re a veteran camper or a new camper, here are some songs to practice before you dive into ESP summer camp!

The first song you must learn is of course ESP’s song. It’s a classic and can be heard every day at camp.

The ESP Song

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

We face a special challenge

And learn to rise above it

With courage and our good friends

Together we can make it

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

We help out in our cities

And learn some useful skills

We just want to contribute

Try us you’ll be thrilled!

Where people get together

To see what we create!

To build some understanding

And better to relate

We’re the group that refuses to yield HUH

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

Extra Special People

That is who we are

We’re ESP you and me (WOO!)

This next song is sung before any meal. It’s a blessing of thanks for our food and is heard at least twice a day at camp.

The Blessing

(Hands above head in O shape)

OOOOOHHHHH

(Clapping to beat)

The Lord’s been good to me

And so I thank the Lord

For giving me the things I need

The sun the rain and the ESP

The Lord’s been good to me

Amen

Dig in

This song is a repeat after me one and is a favorite. Create your own mix of what to do with bananas and dance along!

Repeat After Me Song

The Banana Song

Twirl hands down one at a time
Peel bananas, peel peel bananas
Peel bananas, peel peel bananas

Make a slicing motion with hands
Slice bananas, slice slice bananas
Slice bananas, slice slice bananas

Do the mashed potato
Mash bananas, mash mash bananas
Mash bananas, mash mash bananas

Make an eating motion
Eat bananas, eat eat bananas
Eat bananas, eat eat bananas

Twirl around in a circle and go CRAZY
Go bananas, go go bananas
Go bananas, go go bananas

Before this song went viral and became a remixed song, it was actually a camp song. This song is a crowed pleaser and will surely get everyone on their feet!
