You’ve Got a Friend in Me: a recap of our Grand Slam Summer Friend Fridays

Friend Friday: A time for our community to get a peek into the magic of camp here at ESP.

It’s our first Friday without a Friend Friday, and we’re reminiscing on the most wonderful way to start the day. Many people have asked us what Friend Fridays are, how they started, and why the heck it’s had so many different names! (For the record, it’s been called Flag Friday, Fan Friday, Friends of Flag Friday, and finally Friend Friday.) This Friday morning tradition started when a few community members mentioned what fun our flag ceremonies were to witness. We decided it was only fair to give our friends and families the chance to experience the energy and joy; so we invited them to join us every Friday of day camp.

Now, Friend Friday welcomes everyone to our Friday morning Flag- a time where we celebrate our campers, sing camp songs at the top of our lungs, and start our morning out excited to be with our favorite people. For our visitors, they start their mornings with us by enjoying the INSANE energy of the Welcome Wagon, our camper drop off.

If the welcome excitement isn’t enough to wake you up, we also have a morning staple ready to keep everyone fueled with joy (and coffee)! Our Java Joy cart is stationed outside ESP every morning of camp, including Friend Fridays. Our joyristas serve up a delicious cup of coffee and a day-brightening hug.

After a cup of java, Friend Friday features a photo booth where you can stop and grab a picture with a new friend and a silent auction with items created by our campers throughout the week. Then it’s out to the backyard for the main event. Flag starts with high energy songs from each unit, then a hilarious brag skit. During the skits, our partners from Piedmont Athens Regional helped us bat water balloons into the crowd, the Sign Bros got doused with colored water, and BankSouth competed for a Bachelorette inspired rose. We wrapped Flag up with brags highlighting our campers and community members.

Friend Friday is special because it gives our entire ESP family a time to interact. A chance to interact with our campers is an opportunity like no other as they share their memories from camp and share their different talents and passions.

We couldn’t do what we do without our community support so it means a lot to us that we can host you in our home and provide you with a glimpse of how our campers are thriving.
