After a week off for the Fourth of July, we could hardly wait to get back to ESP and start our third week of Big Bold summer camp! We were so excited to see returning and new faces come through the doors, and remind everyone what ESP is all about. Our Friend Friday was perhaps the most successful one, and we are so thankful to everyone that came out to support our campers. We even had an extra day of fun this past week, when we had a special prom on Saturday! Everyone danced the night away and it was an evening to remember.
The sun was shining bright on Monday morning, and Flag began with as much enthusiasm as the summer started out! After flag, we started back to activities. Outside, campers participated in some games of ultimate dodgeball. Specialty Leader Anna serenaded campers and led them through some of their favorite Disney tunes. Matthew resumed his Mad Science Monday routine, and showed everyone how to make their very own explosive volcanoes. After lunch, was an afternoon of bowling, and almost everyone made a strike!
Tuesday was a yummy day because participants and staff got to make their very own custom crepes! Everyone got to choose from peanut butter, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and bananas to keep things healthy! Sweet tooth’s were satisfied all throughout the building, and almost everyone was asking for seconds. The units kept on snacking with a few rounds of Human Hungry Hippos as well! This full-size take on the game had campers sliding around on scooters to steal balls from the center of the gym. After lunch, staff and campers got on the buses and made their way to Legion Pool! There were enough water fights and splashing to almost empty the pool! It was obvious some had missed their very favorite activity of camp.
Wednesday was full amusement for both staff and campers. Sarah Anne’s older middle unit spent the morning going through the costume bins and dressing up! Oversized glasses and funny hats were all the hip style. Outside, one lucky staff member, Bonnie, was also getting dressed up, but with shaving cream and cereal! It was certainly foreshadowing for Fun Friday… The other members of the Middle unit got to cool down with popsicles they had made for themselves earlier in the week! In the kitchen with Specialty Anna, campers learned about healthy eating and kitchen safety while making smoothies. A pretty refreshing morning!
Thursday was a particularly special day, because Tyler King’s vocational unit got to spend some time out in the city of Athens! The girls went to DressUp and the boys went to Onward Reserve. It was such an amazing morning, because these participants got to feel so special, and independent. Each group learned about creating an outfit and looking put together. They then got to use their new knowledge to go shopping; Onward and DressUp treated each camper to an outfit! For the rest of camp, activities continued in the building. Yoga and dancing kept everyone moving, before lunch was had and the rest moved onto the pool.
Finally, we finished out the week with our third Friend Friday! It was so fun to see everyone come out to ESP for flag, and our Silent Auction was successful again! We love to see the hard work that the units do throughout the week. Though the sun wasn’t shining, the smiles throughout the crowd were beaming from campers, staff, and guests. Fun Friday meant a day for water sports, and lunch was provided by Northwest Exterminating. After lunch, the shaving cream came out, and no one was safe from getting a little dirty! It might have been our most fun Friday yet!
Saturday was one of our favorite days of the year: prom! It was such a wonderful evening; we love this opportunity to see everyone dressed up. Our prom guests met their dates at the door with corsages before moving inside for dinner and dancing. We enjoyed mac n’ cheese, chicken tenders, and sweets from Bone Island Grillhouse. Then, the DJ spun the perfect mix of party tunes courtesy of Sound Insight. Off the dance floor, Off the Wall Photo Booths captured our camper’s goofiest moments. We wrapped the night up with a red carpet walk to showcase our stylish participants for their parents!
